HKMU recently hosted its second “HKMU Hackathon”, bringing together over 120 students from various departments to tackle real-world challenges faced by local enterprises. The event saw students collaborating and inspiring each other to design innovative solutions, with a particular focus on enhancing quality of care for older adults and promoting sustainable development in society through the cutting-edge technology.

In addition to enhancing students' knowledge, cultivating their moral integrity and developing their talent, HKMU also encourages students to deepen their understanding of the nation, to take advantage of the rising opportunities resulting from the country's growth and contribute to the development of the nation and Hong Kong.

HKMU has a long and excellent track record in environmental science research, especially on microalgae. To further microalgae research in the GBA and Southeast Asia, in 2022, the School of S&T established the first open-access microalgae collection and research centre in Hong Kong: the Metropolitan Algal Repository and Supply (MARS).

HKMU welcomes the announcement by the Education Bureau to increase the number of places under the “Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors” (SSSDP). In 2024/25, 21 HKMU full-time undergraduate programmes are subsidised by SSSDP, offering a total of 1,873 places, both of which the highest among all self-financing institutions.

With a grant of about HK$8 million from the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme under the Government's Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund, HKMU, in collaboration with Caritas Institute of Higher Education and Tung Wah College, will develop a first cross-institutional VR simulation teaching game to enhance the interprofessional communication skills of approximately 2,800 undergraduate nursing and physiotherapy students from the three self-financing institutions.

Ir Prof. Frank Chan Fan, Hong Kong Deputy to the National People's Congress and Vice President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, was invited to be our guest speaker at the “Talk of the Metropolis”. Under the topic “Chinese Mondernisation and Hong Kong”, Prof. Chan outlined the unique features and context embodied in Chinese modernisation while exploring how Hong Kong can contribute.

HKMU and FSE Lifestyle signed a Memorandum of Understanding. It signifies the establishment of a foundation for industry-academia collaboration that provides a wide range of learning opportunities for students to keep abreast of the latest developments in the service industry, while facilitating knowledge exchange.

In the latest round of the Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector of the Research Grants Council (RGC), HKMU secured a total of HK$29.1 million for 27 projects, accounting for over 35% of the total RGC allocation, making it the largest player among all local self-financing institutions.

Embarking on the new academic year, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing and Vice President (Research and Student Development) Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong welcomed students back to the campus on the first day of school, wishing them a “good start”.
HKMU recruited over 3,000 new students this academic year. Since 2021/22, the number of students admitted through JUPAS has seen double-digit percentage growth every year, with a 19% rise this year, marking highly encouraging admissions results!

HKMU collaborated with HKLSS to conduct research titled “Dementia risks among Hongkongese aged 55 or above”. The study collected data from more than 1,000 participants aged 55 or above to assess their risk of dementia, revealing that individuals with a higher level of education, a healthy lifestyle, or active employment exhibited a lower risk of dementia.

The “Glamour of Cantonese Opera Shines through the Academia” Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre Opening Ceremony cum Cantonese Opera Performance was held at the Xiqu Centre. A number of renowned artists presented an exciting repertoire to celebrate the grand opening of the Research Centre, showcasing the unique charm of Cantonese opera and driving its development.

Starting this September, HKMU will offer a new Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Science programme, along with the official opening of a 7,000-square-foot Medical Science Laboratory. Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments commonly used in hospitals, the laboratory is set to enhance students' pre-employment training.

HKMU received a total grant of HK$73.9 million from the Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education by the Education Bureau to launch two new programmes – a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in New Music and Interactive Entertainment, and a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Construction Management and Surveying – to nurture talent in the related industries.
