EBSCOhost

Recently, EBSCO Publishing launched a new interface and introduced some new features and improved functions on its database platform, EBSCOhost:

  • The basic search screen is simpler and easier to use.

  • Limiters and expanders are organized on one page with clear categorization for refining a search result.

  • The result page provides a date slide bar for further limiting the date range as well as a myriad of result narrowing options, such as Publication Type, Subject, Author or Publication.

  • Full article citation can be previewed by simply hovering over the magnifying glass icon beside any item.

The Library currently subscribes to a number of databases on this platform, namely: Academic Search Elite, Business Source Premier, Environment Complete, ERIC, etc. To access the new interface of EBSCOhost, go to Electronic Library > E-Journals & Databases > type in "EBSCOhost".

An updated search guide is available.

Featured Resources and Services:

Audio-Visual (AV) Collection

With the development of new courses, the Library has recently collected more than 200 feature films produced in Hong Kong, Mainland, Taiwan, Asia, UK, US and other countries. To check it out, simply go to Electronic Library > Library Catalogues > OUHK Library Catalogue (Web) > type in keyword "feature films" then limit your results by AV materials.

Other than these film titles, the Library collects a wide variety of audio materials such as sound recordings on cassettes and discs as well as visual items in VHS, LD, VCD or DVD formats. Currently the Library keeps more than 2,600 titles of these audio-visual materials to support OUHK's teaching and learning activities.

Users can borrow AV items from the Circulation Counter for 2 to 3 hours use in the Library depending on the duration of the material.

Photocopy / Laser Printing / Internet Access

The self-photocopying/printing service continues to be a favorite of our Library users. In September 2008, more than 124,000 copies and 17,000 printouts were made. Users are, however, reminded that photocopying or printing of materials should conform to the Copyright law. Also, in November, these highly popular facilities, including the photocopiers, network printer and Internet workstations will be relocated to 2/F of the Library new extension.

Hot Topic: Food Safety

Melamine rang the alarm bell (again) on the issue of food safety in Hong Kong, Mainland and other places of the world. While the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong is daily releasing the latest batch of test results of dairy products and the Chinese Authority is ordering punishment over tainted baby milk, the laymen may need to know more about the harmfulness of industrial chemicals and to rely on their own selves for better health & hygiene.

For news coverage of the incidents, check out WiseNews for articles mainly in Chinese. Use Factiva to find related coverage in major English media.

More studies and research on nutrition, food safety, health, hygiene and life science can easily be located in Academic Search Elite, China Academic Journals (Medicine and Hygiene), BIOSIS Previews, Emerald, Environment Complete, MEDLINE, Springerlink, ... etc.

To access these databases, go to Electronic Library > E-Journals & Databases > type in the name of database, then search.
