This project is funded by Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) under the Institutional Development Scheme Research Infrastructure Grant (UGC/IDS(R)16/19). Hong Kong Metropolitan University, with a long and excellent track record in environmental research, aims to contribute to Hong Kong's efforts in coastal wetland conservation through this project — the establishment of the University Research Facilities (URF) for basic and applied research on coastal wetlands in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The University Research Facility (URF), combining existing equipment and facilities in the University with the proposed acquisition, leverages the integrated advantages of the University in environmental research. The facilities will also be open to other academics in the region to facilitate collaborations and knowledge exchange. The URF also nurture new ideas for cutting-edge coastal wetland research and put the University in a stronger position to contribute to coastal wetland research and conservation in the area.

University Research Facilities
Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), with a long and excellent record of accomplishment in environmental research, aims to contribute to Hong Kong's efforts in coastal wetland conservation through the establishment of the University Research Facilities (URF) for basic and applied research on coastal wetlands in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The project will enhance research on coastal wetland conservation in the GBA, as well as expanding and strengthen HKMU's research capability for environmental monitoring and protection research. The facilities are open to other academics in the region to facilitate collaborations and knowledge exchange. The URF will nurture new ideas for cutting-edge coastal wetland research and put HKMU in a stronger position to contribute to coastal wetland research and conservation in the area.
Seminar on Coastal Wetland Research and Management
The Seminar on Coastal Wetland Research and Management was successfully held on 3 September 2021. In the seminar, 6 speakers from different sectors, including academics, authorities and NGOs in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) shared their works and views on coastal wetland conservations and management. Guest speakers included Prof. Joe Lee from the School of Life Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Chen Luzhen from the College of Environment and Ecology of Xiamen University, Prof. Simon Lee from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences of the University of Macau, Ms Xu Wansu from Mangrove Wetland Conservation Foundation and Dr Carmen Or from WWF-Hong Kong.
A workshop on Ecological Diversity Assessment was successfully held on 9 July 2021. In the workshop, ecological significance of wetland and mangrove were introduced to secondary school teachers and students. The participants was also brought to a local mangrove at Tin Kwok, a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), and experienced some classical ecological measurements while appraising the natural beauty of wetland habitat.
The workshop consist of three parts:
Research Meetings and Trainings
Internal research meetings are held to nurture research atmosphere and facilitate exchanges in the university. Academics and research students are invited to share their research in the meeting. Technical seminars and trainings are also organized on need base to provide timely technical support to research staff and students.
