Programme description This programme starts by constructing a solid foundation of language proficiency and understanding upon which to build progressively more demanding studies of different aspects of the English language. The aim of the programme is to develop in all students an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the language. Through their studies in the programme, students will gain communicative skills for work and study; a good understanding of the structure and use of the language; a critical ability to analyse language and literature in context; understanding of language and society and the place of English in the world and a commitment to personal development through lifelong learning. The programme provides a recognised qualification which is highly valued by employers in areas where language proficiency and the ability to analyse language are important. It will open up career pathways in general administrative and executive work, for example, in the civil service, in non-government organizations as well as in commerce and the business sector. The programme also provides an excellent preparation for language teaching and is listed by the Education Bureau as a Recognized Language Major degree. If a graduate of this programme goes on to complete a postgraduate teaching qualification in English, they will get full exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English teachers and become a fully qualified English teacher.
