Postgraduate Diploma in English Studies for Language Teaching

The main aim of this programme is to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the English language and their ability to apply this for enhancing learners' English language standards. Students in the programme will be introduced to major topics and conceptual notions in theoretical English linguistics, applied English linguistics and literature in English, which enables students to conduct linguistic and literary analyses on the one hand and to reflect on their own English language learning and teaching on the other. Upon completing the programme, students should be able to:

1    analyse the sound and meaning systems and the syntactic structures of the English language;

2    analyse written and spoken discourse in relation to its context of use, and evaluate the choice of textual components for fulfilling discourse functions;

3    account for and evaluate the relationships between language, culture and society, and examine the place of English in the world and in Hong Kong;

4    relate their understanding of English as a system to English language learning and teaching; and

5    critically review and evaluate knowledge and perspectives in the English language system based on theories and research findings in the literature.

While this programme is recognized by the Education Bureau (EDB) as one leading to the postgraduate subject knowledge in English (PGSK in English) qualification, it is NOT a PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education) programme.

The three courses in the programme add up to 240 hours of face-to-face lectures and tutorials in total. Students are required to attend evening lectures on weekdays and afternoon tutorials on Sundays.

Students admitted to the programme are required to have obtained:

1. a recognized Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent); and
2. normally, a recognized teacher qualification and/or at least two years of teaching or training experience.

If applicable, applicants have to attend and pass an interview for admission.

The Postgraduate Diploma in English Studies for Language Teaching (PGDESLT) programme is recognized by the Education Bureau (EDB) as an 'Approved Postgraduate Programme in Subject Knowledge for English Language Teachers'. It is NOT a PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education) programme.

In combination with a relevant teacher qualification, graduates of the programme are eligible to apply for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English language teachers.
