At the opening reception of the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Troupe (HKCOT) on 31 May, its founder, Dr Ina Ho Chan Un-chan, announced a donation to HKMU for the establishment of the Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre, which aims to promote education and appreciation of Cantonese opera, as well as enhance local young people and the overseas community's knowledge and appreciation of Cantonese opera through Cantonese opera libretti translation, exchange activities and academic research.

HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said, “Through the Cantonese Opera Research Centre, the University will strengthen its efforts to promote research and the development and preservation of Cantonese opera, which is on the list of World Intangible Cultural Heritage items, and further promote this precious form of art to overseas Chinese and foreign audiences.” Prof. Lam emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting Cantonese opera, especially enhancing the young generation and overseas non-Chinese speakers' knowledge of this national artistic treasure. He said that the University will work closely with the HKCOT through the Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre to promote the development of Cantonese opera and cultivate the culture of preserving the art of Cantonese opera together.

The Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre is expected to be officially opened in August this year. To mark the occasion, an inauguration ceremony and the first public performance in the form of Cantonese opera excerpts will be staged. Please stay tuned for the announcement of the details.
