On 30 April, the Research Institute for Digital Culture and Humanities of the School of Arts and Social Sciences successfully held its second seminar “Database and Textual Mining: Applications of Digital Humanities in Science Fiction Studies” for the series “Chinese Science Fiction in the Digital Age”. The two speakers, Dr Zhang Feng and Dr Liu Yang, discussed new methods for conducting research on Chinese science fiction in the field of digital humanities. The seminar was divided into two sessions. In the first session, Dr Zhang introduced the background of his self-created database on Chinese Science Fiction (CSFDB) and different developmental stages in researching the genre of science fiction. Dr Liu talked about using quantitative methods to conduct research on Chinese science fiction, and to study the fiction's narrative rhythm, structural characteristics and word frequency in the second session. The seminar had over 200 participants from the University community and the public.

The third seminar will be held on 30 May.  Renowned sci-fi writer, Mr Standley Chen Qiufan, and legal scholar, Dr Sun Haoshen will be invited as the speakers to discuss the topic “AI 2041: How We Design the Future with Science Fiction”.  For registration: https://rb.gy/hrxu8q.
