With the gradual resumption of social and economic activities recently, Student Affairs Office (SAO) decides to launch the Global Internship Scheme (GIS) in 2023 to provide subsidy supports to students who have successfully completed the SAO recognized global internship programmes. The Scheme aims at encouraging students to obtain invaluable global work experiences to connect their classroom studies to the real working world and broaden their horizons.
encourage students to gain exposures from internship globally which will enhance their competitiveness and employability;
enable students to immerse in different culture and environment to enhance their global outlook;
provide valuable experiential learning opportunities to students to articulate their studies to the real working world; and
hone students' communication skills and soft skills related to workplace.
HK$5,000 – HK$20,000 each, which is dependent on the internship structure and duration, destination, programme fee and availability of remuneration/sponsorship of the internship opportunities, to an awardee who has successfully completed a recognized global internship and has fulfilled all Scheme requirements. Please note that the subsidy will be given to eligible students as part of financial support and it does not intend to cover all student internship costs. The Scheme authority, i.e. SAO, has full discretions in determining the subsidy level of each application and rejecting the application.
Be a full-time undergraduate student of the University;
Land a global internship which is offered/ recognized by SAO in 2023 summer (please refer to the following “SAO Recognized Global Internship Programme List”);
Obtain an average GPA not lower than 2.0;
Not be suspended, on disciplinary hearing, or on academic probation; and
Priority will be given to students who did not awarded the subsidy before.
Students can only be awarded the GIS once throughout their studies at the University;
The duration of physical global internship should not be less than 4 weeks normally;
Applicants should note the application period and be responsible for applying for the recognized programme by themselves. Before applying, applicants should also check whether they meet the programme requirements and visa application eligibility specified by the programme hosts and countries/regions.
Priority will be given to students who have placed in the work opportunities relevant to their study programmes and/or career goals;
Priority will be given to Student Ambassadors under the SAO Career Accelerator Programme who have completed a series career development training sessions;
Awardees are required to attend the required pre-internship training and briefing sessions to enhance their career readiness and understand more the latest traveling arrangements;
Self-solicited work opportunities outside the above “ SAO Recognized Global Internship Programme List” will not be accepted in general;
The internships should not be stipulated by study programme requirement (e.g. credit-bearing/ curriculum-based internship, practicum, study placement);
Once the application has been approved by the Scheme authority, no change of internship programme will be allowed unless special approval has been sought;
Awardees of this Scheme may also apply for other subsidies from funding sources outside the University in the same year, e.g. Reaching Out Award offered by Hong Kong Government [LINK];
The Scheme authority has full discretion in determining the subsidy level of each application and rejecting applications. Students should not presume that your application must be successful before receiving the official approval from the Scheme authority; and
Outstanding applicants will be considered by the David Chan Outbound Internship Award which offers two quotas in 2023 summer. The award amount is set at ceiling of HK$25,000 each on a reimbursement basis. Similar to GIS, awardees will be required to submit the same set of documents with all expense receipts to SAO by 30 September 2023. Expenses will be reimbursed after received and verified the required documents from the awardees. The reimbursable expenses include air tickets, local transportation, accommodation and other living expenses incurred during the internship. However, please note that the selected applicant will be awarded either the David Chan Outbound Internship Award OR the GIS in the same year. In other words, an applicant will not be awarded both subsidies simultaneously.

Applications that are incomplete, late or have not been accompanied with the required document(s) will not be processed further.
The results will be announced by end-May 2023 normally. Students who have not received any news from our office by late-June 2023 may assume that your applications have not been successful.
Please note students should submit your internship application to the recognized programmes individually. Your internship applications will be considered by the programme organizers separately.
