Biography
Jimmy S. Ren is currently an assistant professor at Department of EECS, School of Science and Technology. Before joining HKMU, he had over 12 year's experience in the AI and software industry. He was an executive research director at SenseTime where he leads a multi-functional team to build high impact computational photography products which are being used by tens of millions smartphone users. Prior to that, he was a staff researcher in Lenovo Labs Hong Kong and was a software engineer in Ericsson China R&D.
He received his Ph.D. degree from City University of Hong Kong. His research interests are computational photography, computer vision and generative AI. He is in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Stanford's List of World's Top 2% Scientists in the area of Artificial Intelligence & Image Processing. His publications appeared in journals such as TPAMI, IJCV, TMM, TCSVT, TITS, etc as well as in top-tier conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, AAAI, ICCP, etc.. He has over 8000 citations according to
Google Scholar. He is a senior member of IEEE.
He invented the core algorithm within world's first AI powered
2x2OCL image sensor, namely Sony IMX854. It is an innovative and hardware friendly AI-based remosaic algorithm for image sensors with Quad-Bayer coding and 2x2OCL micro-lens architecture. This technology became the core function in this AI image sensor.
He also has roles in various academic services such as advisory board member for Master of Science in Data Science program of School of Data Science, Lingnan university. Member of faculty selection committee at Qing Yuan Research Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was also an external graduate research advisor at Tsinghua University Graduate School at Shenzhen.
