Biography
Dr. Benjamin TY CHAN is Dean of the Li Ka Shing Shool of Professional and Continuing Education.
Dr. CHAN obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas (Manila), Master of Philosophy from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Doctor of Education from Durham University in the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of various professional bodies including the Royal Society of Arts, the Royal Society for Public Health and the College of Teachers, UK.
Dr. CHAN held the office of Deputy Director (LiPACE) in 2010 after serving various academic positions in HKU SPACE. He left OUHK in 2012 and subsequently worked in Lingnan University (Head of Research Office), Vocational Training Council (Assistant Deputy Director of Academic Services, Founding Director of Research Support Unit, Academic Director of Applied Science Discipline) and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Assistant Deputy Director (Undergraduate Studies). Dr. CHAN is a seasoned academic administrator with 30 years of extensive experience in all sectors of postsecondary education in Hong Kong ranging from continuing education, higher education, vocational education to performing arts education.
Dr. Chan is an ardent advocate of extra- and co-curricular learning in the postsecondary curriculum to enrich the student learning experience. In addition, he also considers it necessary for postsecondary education to take up the role of developing graduate career readiness as well as promoting socio-emotional learning. He also encourages reflection and writing about teaching practice to contribute actively to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). He writes about various topics in higher education teaching and learning in the Times Higher Education Campus (THE Campus) and cultural dimensions of Chinese learning in the Weiterbildung (Further Education). He also writes in the EvoLLLution and MedHealth Outlook about impacts of educational technology. His opinion pieces can be found in major regional media such as China Daily (HK), Jakarta Post, Taipei Times and East Asia Forum (Australia).
His research interests are in adult education, international education, vocational education and training and public health education. He has been an associate editor of the International Journal of Training Research (Taylor and Francis) and an editorial board member of the Australian Journal of Adult Learning (SSCI indexed).
