Anatomizing medical research with mathematics

Alumnus Dr Wong Kai-choi has a busy work life, but he has still been able to manage to complete several Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Mathematics, Economics and Education at the OUHK. He has also been making use of mathematics and statistics to unravel hidden puzzles in medical research. How does a psychiatrist, who has a deep passion for mathematics, gain new insights into mental illness with humanistic care?

The 'Cantonese Opera Concert on Dream of the Red Chamber', one of the signature events of the OUHK's 30th Anniversary celebration, was held on 1 June at the Grand Theatre of the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Combining the elements of traditional Cantonese opera with a touch of contemporary performing art, the concert present some of the most famous scenes from the renowned novel 'Dream of the Red Chamber' in a new perspective. The concert attracted a full house.

Prof. Nancy Ip, renowned neuroscientist and Vice-President for Research and Development of The HKUST, gave a lecture on 'From Neuro-science Discoveries to Promoting Human Health' for the Great Speaker Series on 9 May, sharing her research on neurodegnerative disease with a focus on the research and drug discovery for Alzheimar’s disease.

Another lecture on health issue under the Great Speaker Series was presented by Secretary for Food and Health, Prof. Sophia Chan on 30 May. She listed out the challenges faced by the Hong Kong medical system, stressed the importance of primary care and expressed the government's measures to deal with such difficulties.

The OUHK Creative Arts Graduation Show 'Mind．Blowing' was held from 21 June to 1 July, showcasing creativity and imagination of the fresh graduates from the four Creative Arts undergraduate programmes with their works presented in various forms such as advertisements, animations, photography and creative writings.

Professor Kai-ming Cheng presented a public lecture for the fourth 'Seminar Series for the 40th Anniversary of the Reform and Opening up of the Country' on 8 May, sharing his views on the advancements and challenges of education in China in the past 40 years.
