HKMU was given the JC VOLUNTEER TOGETHER Caring School label for 2023 under Hong Kong Volunteer Award, an award scheme co-organised by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Agency for Volunteer Service. This was awarded in recognition of our students' contribution to the community under the Student Affairs Office (SAO)'s service-learning initiatives, which translated into a total of 7,207 service hours during the year.
The SAO launched its first service-learning programmes and activities in 2019 with the aim of encouraging students to exercise social responsibility with their knowledge by participating in voluntary activities. In the past four years, it has collaborated with different social partners to organise more than 30 service-learning projects and volunteer activities, involving over a thousand students. The areas of service have included art, history, life education, environmental protection, mental health, education, elderly care, children services and disability inclusion. Last summer, it organised a four-to-eight-week Summer Placement Programme at NGO, providing 33 students with social service work experience in 11 non-governmental organisations.
The SAO also established the HKMU Service Alliance in 2021, lining up volunteer opportunities for student members on a regular basis in order to raise their concerns for the community and underprivileged groups.
